چکیده
We investigate the fast-reaction asymptotics for a one-dimensional reaction-diffusion system describing the penetration of the carbonation reaction in concrete. The technique of matchedasymptotics is used to show that the reaction-diffusion system leads to two distinct classes of sharpinterface models. These correspond to different scalings of a small parameter representing the fast-reaction and defined here as the ratio between the characteristic scale of diffusion for the fastest species and the characteristic scale of the carbonation reaction. We explore three conceptually different diffusion regimes in terms of the behavior of the effective diffusivities for the driving chemical species. The limiting models include one-phase and two-phase generalized Stefan moving-boundary problems as well as a nonstandard two-scale (micro-macro) moving-boundary problem—the main result of the paper. Numerical results, supporting the asymptotics, illustrate the behavior of the concentration profiles for relevant parameter regimes.

متن کاملNumerical Experiments with Self-Adaptive Finite Element Simulations in 2D for the Carbonation of Concrete
Chemical processes like carbonation of concrete structures are driven by slow diffusion processes and fast reactions. This leads to the formation of relatively sharp reaction fronts, which move slowly through the material. Self-adaptive finite element methods provide a tool to automatically generate meshes locally fine enough to capture the reaction, while coarser meshes are sufficient in the b...
متن کاملA High Order Approximation of the Two Dimensional Acoustic Wave Equation with Discontinuous Coefficients
This paper concerns with the modeling and construction of a fifth order method for two dimensional acoustic wave equation in heterogenous media. The method is based on a standard discretization of the problem on smooth regions and a nonstandard method for nonsmooth regions. The construction of the nonstandard method is based on the special treatment of the interface using suitable jump conditio...
متن کاملModelling and simulation of concrete carbonation: competition of several carbonation reactions
Concrete carbonation, i.e. the reaction of alkaline species (inside the concrete) with atmospheric carbon dioxide, is one of the major physicochemical processes compromising the service life of concrete structures. While the main carbonation reaction is that of calcium hydroxide, other constituents such as calcium silicates or calcium-silcate hydrates in the concrete can also carbonate. Many au...
متن کاملA FEM Multiscale Homogenization Procedure using Nanoindentation for High Performance Concrete
This paper aims to develop a numerical multiscale homogenization method for prediction of elasto-viscoplastic properties of a high performance concrete (HPC). The homogenization procedure is separated into two-levels according to the microstructure of the HPC: the mortar or matrix level and the concrete level. The elasto-viscoplastic behavior of individual microstructural phases of the matrix a...
